Everyone needs a certain amount of self-esteem. It has been called the ‘ingredient that gives dignity to human existence’.
But why should you have negative feelings about yourself?
During the process of growing up there can be a period when nothing you do seems right; you bump into things, you drop things, you just generally feel awkward.
Life can seem to be full of embarrassments, great or small, and you may not yet have sufficient experience to bounce back from these disappointments.
Failure to meet your parents’ expectations can be another cause of low self-esteem. Of course most parents will wish their children to do well and you may feel discouraged by what you feel is unfair criticism.
At times too, parents may tend to make unfair comparisons with the school achievements of a brother or sister, or the child of a family friend.
Naturally your parents want the best for you and if you feel they are being too hard why not discuss the situation with them?
